THE PERFECT POPSTAR: SABRINA CARPENTER’S RISE TO FAME

A blonde female singer is beginning to attract attention being none other than Sabrina Carpenter. After internationally charting for weeks with her hit single “Espresso,” people have been following Carpenter closer than ever, especially with the announcement of her new album, Short n’ Sweet. With fun lyrics like, “I’m working late ‘cuz I’m a singer,” I don’t blame them.

This is not Carpenter’s first time in the spotlight, however. In the early 2010s, she played Maya Hart in the Disney Channel original show, “Girl Meets World.” If you were a big fan of that show like I was, you knew Carpenter had obvious potential even at her young age. After the show was canceled, she began focusing on her music career for the next seven years until finally being noticed this summer.

Although quickly rising to fame like many before her, I believe she will remain relevant for a long time following this summer.

For one, her lyrics are not only funny but clever as well. For instance, at the end of her song, “Nonsense,” she says, “This song catchier than chickenpox is … How quickly can you take your clothes off pop quiz?” These lines take the seriousness off of what already is a fun song. Also, they aren’t funny in a joke type of way, but they are a more ‘deadpan’ type of humor which is exactly what gen z is looking for in music today.

Another instance of her different lyricism is featured in her newest song, “Please, Please, Please.” In its chorus, Carpenter sings, “Heartbreak is one thing, my ego’s another / I beg you, don’t embarrass me, motherfucker, oh.” Not only is it hilarious when she calls her lover a ‘motherfucker,’ but her honesty is what makes these lines funny. Telling her lover not to embarrass her is not only relatable but straight-fowardly-funny. These lines are so unique in construction, making her an excellent lyricist.

If you have seen Carpenter perform on stage, you can agree with me she has an excellent stage presence. She struts on stage and sings her songs while wearing adorable sequined outfits and go-go boots. I have seen people call her a real life polly pocket, and I have to agree. It is also obvious she has fun on stage by her facial expressions and body language. She is bringing back the super-feminine pop star, and I for one am here for it.

The last reason I believe in Carpenter’s success is her ‘it’ factor. She has upbeat music, fun lyrics, cute outfits, and most of all, personality. When she walks on stage, people can’t help but watch her perform. Not only can she sing, but she can act well too, making her a double threat. She comes off as personable while using her talents, which is something people look for in a rising star.

Don’t believe me? Taylor Swift even agrees. In her song, “Clara Bow,” she alludes to the next blonde pop star, which many people believe is Carpenter, with the lines, “You look like Taylor Swift … You’ve got edge she never did / The future’s bright, dazzling.” Like Swift, Carpenter has the same blonde hair and bangs. But, Carpenter is more edgy than Swift, especially in her lyricism. By making this connection, people can see the success Carpenter has waiting for her in the future.
